Is my kid still too young to have a Facebook account?

At what age is it appropriate for kids to start using Facebook?

I took this question to twitter today to find out how young is too young to be on Facebook?  But I wanted an avenue for people to expand on their thoughts that was greater than just 140 characters.

Before we get too deep into this, Facebook has in their terms and conditions an age requirement that children must be at least 13 years of age to have a Facebook account.  This is largely because their site, which shares personal and private information including name, age, address, and other such data, falls under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) of 1998.  Facebook has to answer to COPPA as well as the Federal Trade Commission, which determines that the age at which children are mature enough to exchange information such as what transpires on Facebook at 13.  This is from the Facebook Terms and conditions page: Read more…
